Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
