In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
