Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
