The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
